Best food for a Staffie in Newcastle

Staffies are Newcastle's dog. You'll see them on every terrace in Byker and Heaton, usually pulling towards the nearest bit of grass. They're solid, muscly and keen on their dinner, which is exactly why the portion matters: a Staffie will happily eat whatever's in the bowl, so the bowl has to be right.

How much should a Staffie eat?

A typical adult Staffordshire Bull Terrier weighs 11 to 17kg. We use the standard vet formula: resting energy (70 × weight in kg to the power 0.75), times a life-stage factor for your dog, divided by the 3,600 kcal in each kilo of our kibble. For most adults the factor sits between 1.4 (neutered, not very active) and 1.8 (entire and busy).

That's grams of dry food a day, split over two meals. For a 14kg Staffie on Canny Chicken, the quiz shows the exact cost per day from the Founding 100 price, before you give us any details. Treats count: if yours gets a lot, the quiz takes them off the bowl.

Which recipe suits a Staffie?

Canny Chicken is where most adult Staffies start: chicken first, rice for steady energy, no artificial colours. If your Staffie scratches a lot or has a touchy stomach on chicken, Gentle Lamb swaps the protein to lamb. Tell us at the quiz and we'll never send a bag with chicken in it. If the itch carries on whatever they eat, that's one for your vet, not for us.

Staffie questions

My Staffie is always hungry. Should I feed more?

Probably not. Staffies are built to beg. Weigh them every few weeks; if the weight is steady, the portion is right. Our account page re-works the grams when you enter a new weight.

Is the Staffie a 2kg or 6kg bag dog?

Usually 6kg. At around 225g a day a 6kg bag lasts about four weeks, which lines up with one drop a month.

Do you do raw for Staffies?

Yes. Wey Aye Raw is fed by bodyweight, about 2.5% a day for an adult, so a 15kg Staffie eats roughly 375g of raw a day.
